Workplace Personalities Essay

It is an obvious observation that different personalities within the workplace make a difference in the environment. We spend the majority of our waking hours with the people that we work with and the different personalities within the workplace can make it enjoyable or unbearable. The articles that I will discuss in the essay focus on the types of personalities and the cultural fit of those personalities in the workplace.
The first article titled Why Personality Matters in the Workplace by Michael Woody focuses on the types of personalities and refers to them as the Big Five. The second article titled Cultural Fit in the Workplace: How Personality Affects Hiring and Teamwork by Kerry Schofield focuses on the importance of hiring the right types of personalities within an organization to match the culture of that organization. Many people work because they have to and the type of work that people go into is an influence of our personalities. Since our work life is such a significant part of our life we need to be in an environment that allows us to thrive and grow. This article references introverts and extroverts and how someone that is an introvert would not do well in an open office floor plan and would prefer to be in a cubicle or separate office. Hiring the right type of personality for the culture of the workplace is extremely important. According to this article, organizations that hired employees that fit well within the organizational culture had high job satisfaction, were committed to the company and its goals, stayed with the company long-term, and had high job performance (Schofield, 2013).
