Why Do Some Students Do Well In School While Others Struggle To Do So?(Limit You Discussion To Secondary School Students)

In this vast and unlimited world, a whole spectrum of students exists. As Anne Frank once pointed out, “The weak die out and the strong will survive, and will live on forever”; likewise this applies to the school context where certain students strive while others struggle in vain. What sets the mightiest to the weakest apart is the immense number of factors which I will split into three contexts, mainly individual, family and school aspects. This discussion will be revolving around Singaporean secondary school students, and my points for each context would be: one’s mind-set to do well (individual), parents’ expectations and finance (family), as well as the school environment.

This might seem like a mouthful but if the student is ingrained with the mind-set that they will do whatever it takes to do well, in a matter of time, a favourable outcome will be reached. For example, some hold a fixed mindset, in which they see abilities as traits that are not easily changed. In this view, talents are gifts—you either have them or you do not. Other people, in contrast, hold a growth mindset. They constantly harbour the belief that people can cultivate their abilities. In other words, they view talents as possibilities that can be developed through practice. It is not that people holding this mindset deny differences among people. They do not dismiss the fact that some people may be better or faster than others at acquiring certain skills, but what they focus on is the idea that everyone can get better over time. This idea is brought to life by the story of Billy Beane, in the book Moneyball (Lewis, 2003). When Beane was in high school, he was in fact a huge talent–what they call a “natural.” He was the star of the basketball team, the football team, and the baseball team; without much effort. However, as soon as anything went wrong, Beane lost it. He was still stuck in the mindset that he would be the best in everything, and could not accept failure. In contrast, someone in Beane’s situation with a growth mindset will use the disappointment from his failure to motivate him into doing even better in the future. This further emphasizes my point that the mindset of a person affects his success in anything-particularly in this context, school.
