Who talk too much
The essay “Women talk too much” by Janet Holmes begins by showing many proverbs point out that women are too talkative. She is trying to prove her points through the use of her research from talk show, seminars, and many other areas. Holmes does all she can to demonstrate that women in fact talk less than men. From most of her investigations, we can know that women do not talk too much, and it is men who tend to insist other hear their opinions more than women do.

Therefore, teachers praise girls and criticize boys, and give them academic directions. Finally both boys and girls get encouragement. In a word, male and female students tend to have different speaking styles in the classroom. Male students speak in order to give comments, and their style tend to be more argumentative. Meanwhile, many female students talk in order to solve problems and their style tend to be more helpful.
Women’s role in mixed-gender group
In fact, when males and females are equal in social status, but there are some differences on how much each talks or how they talk. Different people have different jobs and functions, so women’s role enhancing the credibility of men’s talk is also absolutely necessary in mixed-gender group. As an example given by Holmes, Miriam Meyerhoff met a mixed-sex group of interviewer in New Zealand, recently found out that female interviewer make more contribution than male, and the explanation for this situation is that “the women were being more cooperative than men in a context where more talk was explicitly sought by the interviewer.”(302) There is no doubt that in mixed group, women are more likely to help others and better at cooperating than men, as they are kinder, agreeable, and more supportive. Also, it is common sense that women are careful, so they think that they should support men. Without women’s assistant, men’s talk may be less convinced. Briefly, women talk as much as men in the mixed group, and it seems that woman focus more on making a better environment for everyone present.
