I have just been asked to teach the concept of adaptation to a psychology class. I will conduct three experiments for this. Then I will write a paper that describes adaption and how I experienced it in my experiments. The paper will cover the following. I will fully describe process and results of the experiments that I chose. I will also answer what is sensory adaptation. Then I will explain the concept of sensory adaptation, and refer to my text for the definition of sensory adaptation. Next I will explain how adaptation is evident in each of my experimental results. I will provide a comprehensive description ...view middle of the document...
Submerse your hands into the water (right into cold, left into hot) for about 3 minutes After 3 minutes, quickly transfer both hands to the lukewarm (middle) bowl. What did you sense? Record your reaction.
So with the description of our experiments done, let’s get started with the first experiment. When I rubbed my index fingers gently over a piece of very coarse sandpaper a few times I rated its coarseness on a scale from 1 (very soft) to 7 (very coarse), with that I give it a 5.
After a minute or two, I rubbed the same finger over the paper and again and rated its coarseness as 9 since my figure was more sensitive. My perception of the coarseness changed Due to repetitiveness of the experiment.
The next experiment I prepared one cup with sugar water and one with fresh water. I took a sip of the sugar water and swished it around in your mouth for several seconds without swallowing it. Gradually, it tasted less sweet. Then I disposed of the sugar water and tasted from the cup containing fresh water. The taste of the fresh water did not surprise me.
Finally in experiment 3 I fille 3 medium-sized bowls as follows: bowl 1 – with very hot (but not painfully hot) tap water bowl 2 – with very cold tap water, and bowl 3 – with a mixture of the very hot and very cold water. Then I arranged them, so my right hand is in front of the cold water, and my left hand is in front of the hot water, and then the lukewarm water is in the middle. I submersed my hands into the water (right into cold, left into hot) for about 3 minutes. After 3 minutes, I quickly transferred both hands to the lukewarm (middle) bowl. When this happened I sensed with the hand that went cold to warm the warm water felt hot and the hand that went from hot to warm the warm water felt cold.
Now that that is I will answer what is sensory adaptation. Then I will explain the concept of sensory adaptation, and refer to my text for the definition of sensory adaptation. Next I will explain how adaptation is evident in each of my experimental results. I will provide a comprehensive description of the sensory systems that are involved in the experiments that I performed. This...
