Many African cultures still utilize traditions and beliefs in establishing where a member of the community fits in. There are many different examples of this throughout the African continent. In many African communities family plays an important role not only with the family hierarchy but also with the greater community. In extreme cases the groom may work for his father-in-law if he can afford a proper bride’s price. This helps the two communities and families involve maintain a vested interest in the couple remaining together. In the event the relationship does not work out, a portion of the bride’s price is expected to be returned. Brideswealth is not a fitting description of the intent behind the exchange of goods/service or money for the groom to be married to the bride. In many African cultures it is a tradition that helped bring differing communities and families together peacefully (Khapoya, 2010). This tradition has helped the African establish tightknit communities.
Another tradition or belief that has helped establish strong communities within many African societies is respect for elders. Many African societies have an age group system in place with specific jobs for members within each group. Some African communities establish the age group based on actual age or generation. Others have established complicated rituals around rites of passages such as entering manhood or being circumcised. These cultures typically established a time frame with which several young men of various but relatively close age preform the ceremony together establishing a community age group.
