Blair Allman
Optimism and Individualism

With the society in the world we live in today, I do not think it is possible for people to live as complete individuals and nonconformists. Emerson gives a good visual of society whenever he says, “[s]ociety is a joint-stock company in which the members agree for the better securing of his bread to each shareholder, to surrender the liberty and culture of the eater.” (page 184) I mean, yes, I wish the people of the world could be complete individuals and do what makes them happy and not have to worry about pleasing everyone else. But it’s just not a logical thing. I agree with Emerson whenever he quotes, “[n]othing is at last sacred but the integrity of your own mind…” (page 184) but there has got to be limits somewhere. Emerson makes it seem like every ...view middle of the document...

From the story Self-Reliance Emerson says, “[w]e but half express ourselves, and are ashamed of that divine idea which each of us represents…” (page 184) because people are afraid to stand out and the are afraid of being judged for who they are. This causes them to forget who they are and to become just another face in the crowd. When Emerson says, “[t]o believe your own thought, to believe that what is true for you in your private heart it is true for all men,-that is genius,” (page 183) he is saying the same thing is me. People don’t react on their own opinions, they base they feelings on the opinions of the people around them.
Another reason I don’t think people can live as complete individuals is because they are too lazy to be themselves. Like Emerson says in his story, “[i]t is easy in the world to live after the world’s opinion…” (page 184) It’s much easier to do what everyone else is doing and it’s much easier to just fit in and go along with the crowd. So people tend to forget who they really are and how they really feel and just take the easy way through their lives. And that’s how our government gets messed up. People not taking the time to learn about what is going on in the country and just basing their political view points on what others suggest to them.
So that is why I do not believe it is humanly possible to live in a world where everyone is a complete individual and nonconformists. Because not all people are good people, and them being able to do whatever they want could turn into a very unsafe situation. Because people are always choosing to do what others persuade them to do with their life instead of saying, “hey, this is my life, I’m going to do what I want to do for once.” And because people are just to lazy to decide they want to start living for themselves and showing their true personalities to the world.
