The Personality Approach to Leadership
Leaders come in many shapes and forms. As we look at leaders in the different types of organizations, I will be able to explain and justify why leaders act the way that they do. Every situation calls for a different type of leadership style. In my paper I will explain the different types of leaders and why they perform in certain ways. I will also show how their effectiveness to different organization situations effect their followers. Every organization has to step back and look at various situations and focus on how to improve them. As effective leaders, we have to use that strategy to make improvement. By seeking and being aware of personality characteristics, a leader will be able to justify, if any, the level of power he or she has. Power, used to better serve followers, will work in the favor of the leader because the followers will truly understand the mission and will want to prove themselves loyal to that mission. Power can work to better serve the leader, but it can also hurt the mission if it is used for selfless reasons. Selfless reasons may range from personal gains to mainly looking out for oneself and forgetting about the rest.
When followers feel they are not being treated fair or do not see where their input was rewarded, they may feel the need to reject their leadership and the mission as a whole. This shows a negative influence form the leader to the followers. Influence is very important for mission accomplishments. Influence stems from the leader down to every single follower in the chain. As we look at effective leaders, we must break down how effective leaders are formed. As stated earlier, personality is the particular combination of an individual’s emotional, attitudinal, and behavioral response patterns of an individual to another. When we deal with different personality theorists we must look at why people experience changes in different situations. Some of these reasons for personality changes include, but are not limited to, basic personality changes, development which may stem from the concept that personality is affected by various sources, psychological which stem from an individual’s differences, traits, and types.
As stated in the text, research have shown the most promising empirical results related to leadership effectiveness based on an individual’s personality have come from examining individuals according to, “The Big Five Personality Dimensions”, which are extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness (Weiss 2011). These components are generally stable over time and appear to be attributable to a person’s genetics rather than the effects of one’s environment. During research, many have tried to investigate to see whether the relationship between happiness and extraversion in some adults can also be seen in children. The implications of these findings can help identify children that are more likely to experience episodes of depression and develop types of treatment that such children are likely to respond to (Wikipedia, 2013). With extraversion, ones self-esteem and self-efficacy are two mediators for ones well-being. Self-esteem relates to individuals’ with a high level and a greater degree of confidence about themselves and their abilities have higher degree of subjective well-being. Where-as self-efficacy individuals have the belief about abilities to perform up to personal standards, the ability to produce desired results, and the feeling of having the ability to make important life decisions.
