NETWORK ANALYSIS (PERT & CPM)
It is a technique through which large projects are broken down to individual jobs or events and arranged in a logical network. PERT and CPM are two such network-based techniques designed to assist in the planning, scheduling, and control of projects. A project is defined as a collection of interrelated activities with each activity consuming time and resources.
PERT: Program Evaluation and Review Technique
CPM : Critical Path Method.
Framework of PERT and CPM
There are six steps common to both PERT and CPM.
1. Define the project and all of its significant activities or task.
2. Develop the relationships among the activities. Decide which ...view middle of the document...

The normal completion
time is the time we estimate it will take under normal conditions to complete the activity.
The crash completion time is the shortest time it would take to finish an activity if
additional funds and resources were allocated to the task.
PERT NETWORKS: For each activity three time estimates are defined.
Optimistic time (a): which occurs when execution goes extremely well.
Most likely time (m): which occurs when execution is done under normal conditions.
Pessimistic time (b): which occurs when execution goes extremely poorly.
The expected time t = (a+4m +b)/6
Variance of activity completion time, variance = {(b-a)/6}2
Project variance = sum of variances of activities on the critical path.
Project standard deviation =square-root of project variance
To the find probability that project will be completed on or before due date
Compute Z = (due date- expected date of completion)/project s.d,
using normal table we can find the probability.
Normal time: The time required to complete an activity without allocating extra resources.(Nt)
Normal cost: The cost of carrying out an activity without allocating extra resources. (Nc)
Crash time: The minimum time required to complete an activity with allocating extra resources.(Ct)
Crash cost: The maximum cost of carrying an activity with allocating extra resources.(Cc)
Cost slope = (Cc- Nc)/(Nt-Ct)

1. Draw network for following projects:
** Opening of a new office for a commercial airline
Following events are assumed to take place in some sequence.
PERT-Events:
Event 1: Location of site started
Event 2: Location of site completed
Event 3: Building for office selected
Event 4: Cleaning of the office building started
Event 5: Cleaning of the office building completed
Event 6: Interior decorator starts work
Event 7: Interior decorator finishes work
Event 8: Opening of new office advertised or announced
Event 9: List of invitees for the opening day prepared
Event 10: Invitations sent
Event 11: Office formally opened.
CPM-Activities:
Activity A: Locate the site where several buildings are available on rent
Activity B: Select a building where the office can be accommodated
Activity C: Engage cleaners
Activity D: Clean the office area
Activity E: Decorate the interior
Activity F: Advertise the opening of the new office
Activity G: Prepare a list of invitees for the opening day
Activity H: Send the invitations
Activity I: Formally open the office

2. Draw a PERT network for the following project :
▪ A is the first or start event and K is the end event.
▪ J is a successor event to F.
▪ C and D are successor events to B.
▪ D...
