“Competition in the 21st century's global economy will be complex, challenging, and filled with competitive opportunities and threats.” (Ireland & Hitt 2005, p. 63) In Ireland and Hitt’s paper, they discussed that today’s organizations are undergoing a challenging environment which is competitive and filled with changes. Also, Glenn and Mehdi (2009) defined the strategic leadership in a more specific term as “the ability to influence others in your organization to voluntarily make day-to-day decisions that lead to the organization’s long-term growth and survival, and maintain its short-term financial health.”
From these definitions, it is not hard to tell that the strategic leaders are distinct from the concept of managers. Managers concentrate on the daily operations and counting value from the business, they tend to create circles of power to control the group and manage the employees to accomplish the business targets. Given the above, the traditional role of manages is not adequate to success the business. The managers would only keep the business running on the daily basis for the short term. However, to succeed the business in the long term and lead the business going further, there is an urgent need from organizations to apply the strategic leadership which include new responsibilities to adapt themselves within today’s business environment.
Secondly, although managers are important to organizations in terms of keeping the order and stability as the managers are able to control the details of the work being performed in the daily operation (Glenn & Mehdi 2009). Strategic leaders, however, are not to be neglected by organizations but become ever more important. Not only because the responsibilities of strategic leaders and managers are complementary, but it is the strategic leaders who have the skills and characteristics to make the organizations distinguish themselves and...
