Social media outlets and their changes over the years
Social media didn’t just appear out of the blue over the last decade, but it can be said to have definitely emerged in the last ten years. This outlet has been around for over 30 years and its objective is to help humans communicate, interact and learn from others across civilization (O’Keefe & Clarke-Pearson, 2011). Social media actually started with the telephone and not the computer. It was used as a digital device to network, socialize and gathering information personally and professionally. Communication is an essential element for connecting and expanding our society and the telephone had a vital role in that as it continues to do today
Telephone (cell phones, smart phones)
The telephone not only opened the lines of communication with others, but it also spawned the beginning of social media throughout the world. First developed in the 1800s, it was seen as a device that would enable the transformation of human voices over an electric wire (O’Keefe & Clarke-Pearson, 2011). Over the years, many people continued to revolutionize this product and it has become of the top uses for social media today, especially among our children. Today telephones have discarded their role of being attached to a landline with limited use and now has become more of an on- the- go gadget that are now known as cell phones or smart phones. These advance telephone devices are now equipped with the computer technology that will allow children and adults the capability to have real -time hands on all social media outlets, regardless of their location or the time. Children frequently have use of social media through these devices no matter if they are at home, school, church, sports event, or out of state or country. Social media is constantly at their fingertips without ceasing and because of this it has become a vital component in their development.
Television is another primary source of social media that is readily and tremendously used by children throughout their life. It too has also been revamped over the years due to the technology boost in the past few decades and continues to advance. In the beginning, television was considered a small social media outlet with very few channels or programs and was only viewable until certain hours of the night (Pecora, Murray & Wartell, 2007). Programs that aired were often family-oriented and didn’t involve any graphic, violent or sexual scenes. Because it was a highly valuable priced item, many households couldn’t afford the enjoyment of having one.
Today television has...
