Social Media
Final Term Paper
Professor

Abstract
Social media sites are growing in popularity and new ones are being developed all of the time. This paper will go through not only the future of these sites, but the history as well. It will talk about the positives and negatives of using the social media sites. It will also talk about the importance of security use on the sites as well.
The Beginning
Long gone are the huge uses of chat rooms. While they are somewhat still in use they are not in the high use that they once were when AOL and Yahoo first emerged into the internet. Those were once great ways to communicate with those you knew and those you will never meet in real ...view middle of the document...

It has grown in great numbers and is much easier to use than its predecessor MySpace. People are not the only ones that are using this site. Companies, non-profit organization, celebrities, entertainment groups, interest groups and so much more are taking advantage of this huge networking site. It’s a great way to not only stay connected with your family and friends, but to get people to know who you are and what you are about. This is a huge plus for companies that want to get there name out there into the public scene. They can have it to where people can either praise them or even put in some complaints. While no one wants there to be negativity about them out there, it can be helpful in knowing what needs to be fixed.
This site is also come to great use during times of voting to promote candidates, for police to use to get the word out on suspects they are looking for, and for news groups to get the most up to date news information out there to their listeners.
There are other sites as well, such as Twitter. Twitter is more of a web-based messaging service where the users basically send out a text for those interested to follow. It is not really looked at as a social network as much as an information network. It’s more of a site to just basically eavesdrop on what may be going on in different people’s life. You don’t even have to be friends to be able to see what is being said or to say something back at them. It is just a mere simple way to talk back and forth through a basic communication.

Positives and Negatives
With all the great positives that surround the social networking on a whole, you can be certain that there is going to be a negative side as well. From people giving information out that they should not, to people having there ID stolen and even cyber bulling. These are all negatives issues that can be faced when being on a social network. What is good though is that there are steps that can be taken by the user to help reduce the chances of this occurring.
The first step is to not post information out there that one should not. Giving your exact address and phone number is not the best idea for an individual to do. It’s great for a company and for their consumers or possible consumers, but not so much for lets say, a teenager or anyone individual for that matter. Letting people see this kind of information can lead to stalking, threats, and stolen ID. Keeping this kind of information off these sites is a very good idea.
It does not only stop there. It’s also a good idea, not to share when you are not going to be home, or if you just bought the news biggest TV or newest technology item out there. This would only allow for the bad guys to see when the best time to break in is and what they can steal. In fact there are now insurance companies that will look into you accounts and see if you publically released this information and they will not cover your losses if you are found to have done this.
