El profundo egoísmo que marca a los distintos personajes en la lucha por la supervivencia, se convierte en una parábola de la sociedad actual, trascendiendo así el significado de ceguera más allá de la propia enfermedad física.
Algo hace que esta novela sea muy particular. El autor se da el lujo de obviar los nombres de los múltiples personajes. Sólo la exhaustiva descripción que hace de cada uno de ellos permite que el lector los identifique claramente.
Uno de los numerosos protagonistas de la trama, por alguna circunstancia no descrita por el autor, no se contagia de la enfermedad y para acompañar a su cónyuge finge sufrirla. Este personaje se convertirá en el "guía" colocado en la obra no solamente para los enfermos de la narración, sino para que los lectores nos hagamos muchas preguntas. En especial: ¿cuál sería nuestro grado de responsabilidad como personas que "veamos la luz" en un mundo de ciegos?
