Banning same-sex marriage can be seen as discrimination towards the couple which is against human rights. (Lee 56) So, legalizing same-sex marriage will grant the couples benefit from the rights offered by the law. Some of the rights are: the right to pension benefits, tenancy rights, responsibility to provide reasonable maintenance for partners and children, possible parental responsibility for a partner’s children, full recognition for life insurance, the same tax treatment as married couples and visiting rights in hospitals. (O’ Brien 75) When gay marriages are illegalized, those in it will feel that they have been prohibited also to show each other love. (Kranz ...view middle of the document...
Many people are feared that when the same-sex marriage is legalized, it would destroy the traditional household.
On the other hand, it is best for the children to be raised by a mother and a father. There are only little researches being done on whether children raised under gay parents will be disadvantaged compared to others, but it is recognized that a straight household is the optimum environment to raise children. The absence of a father and a mother in a household often causes social and financial problems. (Dr. Krause, 2010) In connection to the topic, same-sex couples aren’t the optimum environment in which to raise children. (Bidsturp, 2009)
Furthermore, same-sex marriage is a contradiction in the tradition of marriage. Marriage is an institution between one man and one man. (Bidsturp, 2009) So, a man should only be for a woman and woman for a man. Same-sex marriage is against religious freedom to have recognized a relationship that they consider is morally wrong. (Messerli, 2009) Also, allowing gay couple to marry will pose a threat to the heterosexual marriage. (Los Angeles Times, 2010) Lastly, it offends everything that the church and our religion believed and is fighting for.
Moreover, the children raised by same-sex couples would be greatly affected. Not only the gay couples will experience problems and discrimination but their adopted child/children as well. Urban institutors and social scientist agree that children that are in other household arrangements such as gay or lesbian household will have greater risk of lifestyle, for example, dropping out of school, poor performance in school etc. (Dr. Krause, 2010) Meanwhile, children will have greater chance to be discriminated and bullied by other classmates and this could have a negative effect on their development. Also, children raised by homosexual parents are continually exposed to homosexuality. As a result, they are at higher risk of becoming homosexual themselves and their behavior will be more or less affected by the growing environment. (Robinson, 2008) From the information above from different authors, it only says that not only the gay couples are affected but also the children.
As a summary, same-sex marriage may have good and bad effects when legalized. It may be in our church, society, government, and most especially to us too. In spite all of these; the people who will be greatly affected are the gays and lesbians themselves. For...
