There is no doubt that Baidu is the biggest Chinese search engin in the world. Compared with 1999, when Baidu had just been found, it was a only small company with 7 seven people, nowdays, Baidu occupied nearly 80 percents of the market share of search engin in China. Most people would like to own the success of Baidu to the initiator, Robin Li.
Before Robin Li founded Baidu, he was just a network engineer, but now, he has already become an excellent leader. As a leader, Robin has many good qualities. In Baidu, co-workers always call each other by their Chinese name or English name, and never by the position. For Robin Li, no one in Baidu will call him Mr. Li, " and they will call him Robin directly. Here is another example, in early days, the company has its own a little restaurant. Generally, the staff gather together there to have lunch, because there are many people in Baidu, while the seats are fewer, the people who come later often have no seat. In this case, people would stand, eating, or waite for a seat. One day, when Robin Li carried his food there, there is already no seat, so he stood aside to wait patiently and consciously. No one in the dining room stood up and gave him a seat. To Robin Li and all the other people in Baidu, if you come late, you should wait, no matter you are CEO or just a general staff. This is to respect the rules.
This equality can be embodied obviously in meetings. In the internal meetings of Baidu, when Robin Li is giving his speech, everyone can feel free to interrupt him, to express their own views, or refute Robin's views. the equality and freedom in Silicon Valley cultural has impacted on Robin Li. One day in May, Robin Li participated in a seminar holded by an assistant product controller. As usual, Robin Li sat quietly at the meeting just like he didn't exist. This seminar is to discuss that should Baidu to enter a new field. the assistant product controller and other invited participants all presented their views actively. The conference had been carried out for nearly two hours, finally a vice president made the decision " not to enter the field ", although Robin Li later presented his idea that they can try to joint venture with a good company in this field first, but the idea was immediately dennied by a executive who participated the conference on telephone. He thought that they should first cooperation for a period of time, and deeply understand the company, if it's valuable, they can make investment. This is the final decision of the conference.
It is quite common for such a meeting in baidu. In Baidu, to discuss any problems, Robin Li's opinion is only " personal view ", rather than the views of a leader. On many issues, Robin Li's opinion is often denied. It is considered to be very consistent with the principle Robin Li praised " Baidu is not only belong to Robin Li, but also every Baidu people ". Robin Li and the other management people in Baidu is also trying to maintain the discussion atmosphere, deliberately breaking the habit that speak from the people in higher position to lower ones, and they spare no efforts reduce the influence caused by high position's desision on general staff.
