Moving Truck Cost Analysis

The Thompsons have lived in Canada all their life but recently Mr. Thompson got a job offer he could not refuse. The new job will require they move to the west coast of the United States. This is going to require they move across the country from New Brunswick, Canada to Seattle, WA. Which is a total of 3200 miles.
Although the company Mr. Thompson will be working for will reimburse them for the move, they still have a budget they need to stay under so they can have enough money for hotel stays, stocking the house with food, cleaning supplies etc. when they arrive. They are planning on leaving early and site seeing on the way but still arrive at least two weeks early so they have time to settle in. Arriving ...view middle of the document...

25 for each mile over 1000.
Let X = Amount of miles traveled
1500 = the initial cost of the first 1000 miles
3,200 = the total amount of miles traveled
\$2.25 per mile over 1000 miles therefore;
1500 + 2.25(X-1000) = Cost of moving over 1000 miles
1500 + 2.25 * 2200 = \$6,450
For traveling less than 1,000 miles, cost will be a flat rate of \$1500
1500 + 2.25 * (1200-1000) = \$1,950
1500 + 2.25 * (1500-1000) = \$2,625
1500 + 2.25 * (2000-1000) = \$3,250
1500 + 2.25 * (2500-1000) = \$4,875
1500 + 2.25 * (3000-1000) = \$6,000
1500 + 2.25 * (3200-1000) = \$6,450

Acme Moving Co.
Acme charges 2.00 a mile
Let X = Amount of miles traveled
Acme charges \$2.00 per mile traveled therefore;
2 * X = Cost of moving
2 * 3200 = \$6,400
2 * 500 = \$1,000
2 * 750 = \$1,500
2 * 1000 = \$2,000
2 * 1200 = \$1,400
2 * 1500 = \$3,000
2 * 2000 = \$4,000
2 * 2500 = \$5,000
2 * 3000 = \$6,000
2 * 3200 = \$6,400
Solution Points
2.00x = 1500 + 2.25(X-1000)
2.00x = 1500 + 2.25X – 2250
+ 2250 + 2250
2.00X + 2250 = 1500 + 2.25X
- 1500 -1500
2.00X + 750 = 2.25X
-2.00X -2.00X
750 = .25X
/.25 /.25
6000 = X
Solution Points;
(3000, 6000)
(750, 1500 )
Decision Process:

The Thompsons have analyzed the cost of moving 3200 miles with both Acme Moving and Lightening Moving companies and here is what they have discovered:
Lightening Moving is less expensive after the solution point of 750 until they reach 3000 miles when it becomes more expensive again, in the end costing \$50 more than Acme for the 3200 mile trip.

Final Recommendation:
The Thompsons should hire Acme for their move across country. Acme will charge a total of \$6400 for the 3200 mile trip and Lightening Moving would charge \$6450, therefore Acme will save the Thompsons \$50.00.
