In the novel Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, first impressions and thoughts of main characters from Elizabeth change throughout the story to reveal that they can often be contradicting to a person’s true character. Even though it is normally thought of as negative to judge others without getting to know them, it is quite often done before we even have time to think about it. Even worse is that after judging others, the feelings towards them are often hard to change, even if they are proven wrong which is hard to do. The relationships that show the nature of wrong first impressions are with Elizabeth Bennet and Darcy along with Wickham. The Impact of a first impression is very strong but also has the possibility of being wrong. In the case of Wickham and Darcy, Both first impressions imposed on them were contradicted later on in the story. Darcy turned from proud and arrogant to sweet and loveable, while Wickham went from charming to devious. The lasting impact of a first impression is shown when Mr. Darcy asks Elizabeth to marry him and she replies with, “From the very beginning-from the first moment, I may almost say-of my acquaintance with you, your manners, impressing me with the fullest belief of your arrogance, your conceit… I felt that you were the last man in the world whom I could ever be prevailed on to marry.” The lasting impact of Darcy's first impression on Elizabeth has stayed with Elizabeth for quite some time now. Later on in the book however, Mr. Darcy has shown improvement and says, “I hoped to obtain your forgiveness, to lessen your ill opinion, by letting you see that your reproofs had been attended to,” and explains to Elizabeth that he has changed and wants her to know it. The idea behind the importance of first impressions is that they are often incorrect and people who are close-minded need to be able to open up and accept the ability of others to change.
