Diary of A Virginia Planter

The creation of The Constitution is one of the most important events in American history because it shaped the future of the nation. America's forefather's insightful vision gave a country the ability to walk while still in infancy. Similar to most historical events, the Constitution did not go without criticism and people rejected that it take the place of the Articles of Confederation which was America's original Constitution. Federalists believed in the power of the Constitution for the same reason Anti-Federalists did not, which was the misuse of power. The constitution, too, which was the result of our deliberation, is unquestionably the wisest ever yet presented to men." Jefferson made it clear to me that The Constitution will allow our new government to adjust the tax laws and the states will no longer operate as individual sovereignties, but as subdivisions of one big government. I knew, then, that our new nation was going to encounter many changes in the near future. Even though I will not make as much money as I now do as a planter because of new tax legislations, I feel that I will be repaid in the security of my soul. I have always felt that the Articles of Organization gave reason for men of power in one state to conflict with men of power in another state. The psychology behind the articles stood against everything that the term "United States of America" stood for. Somehow the great leaders and thinkers of our new nation have created a moral code that translates only to a certain group of people. The Declaration of Independence states that "all men are created equal", yet we still own men as slaves while we deprive them of being with their families and education. Thomas believed that The Constitution's failure to abolish slavery will leave a stain on America's landmark and I agree with him. He felt that he did not have the authority to get rid of the this treacherous act and the pressures of wealthy men and politicians were too much for him to overcome.
