Performance Management Systems
Managing employee performance is essential for employers. The process is to help establish a motivated workforce that understands what needs to be achieved at the organizational level. Performance management is about aligning the organization and employee’s skills, competency, and development plans with an emphasis on improvement, learning, and development so that the business strategy involves creating a high performance workforce (PeopleStreme, 2013). Employee performance contains certain components that make it work, it supports employee motivation and assists in capitalizing company performance and employee contributions.

Hiring and training employees is a costly venture and these costs can be kept to a minimum by having the right job description for the right job.
For the performance management system, it is of significant importance for a company to be able to translate the organizational goals into quantifiable employee goals. These goals must be S.M.A.R.T. (Go2, 2014). Specific, this means knowing what the plan is and how the plan will be executed. Measurable, is creating the criteria to be able to gauge the progress. Attainable, is setting goals which are realistic but allow the employee to stretch themselves. Relevant, each step in the process should help the employee to get closer to the ultimate goal. Finally, the goal should be time-bound, each goal must be given a set time to be completed so that the employee can stay on task. Managers and employees must have mutual cooperation and know that they are moving in the same direction towards the same goal. When this happens it creates a sense of teamwork which is always beneficial for any organization including the managerial and employee relationships. The performance management system should also allow the employee to input information also. Especially since the employee is the person actually performing the job or task their input is imperative. Also, if the employee is able to enter information it is much easier to accept feedback on the task or tasks at hand.
Performance management systems can help to motivate employees by establishing open lines of communication between the employee and middle or upper management. The employees have a place to put their ideas and comments in a constructive way and their supervisors can view this information to be able to coach or train the employee to do better or to praise the employee for doing a good job.
