With the increasing changes in health care, it is up to the nurses to keep themselves updated and competent. Institutes of Medicine also stress the importance for the nurses to be more clinically skilled to keep up with the changes. It focuses on primary nursing care to prevent disease and modify life styles. The one true way to reduce health care cost is by prevention of illness. As there remains high demand for nurses in hospitals the demand also shifted into community. As there are more financial burden on hospitals patients are getting discharged early to rehab facility, nursing home, skilled nursing facility and home with skilled nursing care. The nurses must be adequately trained to care for a diverse population and competent enough to manage the changes in the different conditions and settings these patients are. As healthcare is shifting towards patient-centered care and moving away from specialty care an educated nurse can provide a better education for the patients to keep them from acute care facility and thus they can manage their disease and symptoms at home. As nurses we should collaborate with primary care to accomplish patient-centered care within the community. The only way nurses can familiarize with new technology and procedures are through continuing education.
IOM recommends nurses to become full partners with other health care team members to reform health care system. Becoming full partners means taking responsibility for identifying problems, implementing plans, keeping track of improvement over time and making changes to achieve the goal. ‘Nurses are the first line of contact with the patient. As nurses work together with other healthcare team they have to act as leaders to provide appropriate care for the patients.
