Nurse Bullying Essay

NURSE BULLYING: UNPROFESSIONAL CONDUCT
Looking into the case on nurse bullying, a plethora of conduct violations is evident. One could make the argument that Raymond is at fault for his conceited attitude. One could also argue that he brought on the bullying of his coworkers. Should Raymond employ at conceited disposition? Most would respond with a no. Although Raymond’s behavior was perceived as a form of arrogance and not found to be so for sure, he could have altered his conduct around his coworkers to ensure the right perception. Regardless of the clarity of Raymond’s behavior and attitude, it is clear that several of Raymond’s coworkers are jealous of his knowledge and expertise. ...view middle of the document...

Accountability is not all about making sure one gets their job done consistently. It is also ensuring one’s behavior will not be such that will cause division within the organization and detriment to the team.
For a manager or leader, intervention is the obvious answer. I believe the employees who are responsible should be made aware of the consequences that will come if the bullying is not terminated. The bullying will never stop if those involved do not see the issue in their actions and if they believe they will not be punished. The nurse leader should first investigate and attempt to understand why the bullying is occurring. Depending on the findings of the leader’s investigation, there may be a quick intervention such as a department change or a shift change that can eliminate the bullying. Another possible means for intervention could be a policy change. In each organization, there should be clearly specified instructions for employees to follow if they feel there are the victims of bullying. This implementation can cause those who think about bullying others to be deterred from this act knowing that victims have an avenue of relief which could ultimately lead to the transgressor’s termination. If an issue arises and it is escalated through this avenue, the committee responsible for answers these claims should be sure to follow through with discipline so others know how formidable this choice is. I believe it would also be helpful to have the staff members participate in extra training sessions aimed directly towards workplace bullying. Reminding the staff of how it affects the business, its leaders, staff and its reputation can be an effective means of diverting this type of behavior. Along with these avenues of intervention, another simple thing to do would be to provide the opportunity to fill out an anonymous report. Anonymous reports can help those who feel inferior and are afraid to step forward with their concerns.
There can be many misconceptions of what workplace bullying is and how it is defined. At times, people view workplace bullying as someone simply mistreating you or discriminating against you. However, there are marked parameters as to what is actually considered workplace bullying. “Workplace bullying is when one person or group of people in a workplace single out another person for unreasonable, embarrassing, or intimidating treatment. Workplace bullying can be the result of a single individual acting as a bully or of a company culture that allows or even encourages this kind of negative behavior” (Bullying Statistics, 2015). One type of bullying, as found in this case, is the participation in practical jokes. Practical jokes may appear to be innocent fun, but it can become emotionally damaging if it is constantly directed towards one individual. Another form of workplace abuse and bullying can be a certain number of employees ganging up on another employee aggressively. There should never be a time at work when one...
