The purpose of an operating system is to make the computer work. The (OS) operating system software enables the user to interact with the system or the computer. The operating system manages the different devices connected to the systems like a mouse or keyboard. The operating system provides a user interface to the machine and offers a way for a user to control the system. No computer can operate without an operating system.
The functions of an operating system are to manage the main components of a computer and act as a user interface for the computers hardware. The operating system is responsible for performing activities like: providing a user interface, performing common hardware functions, manages the memory and manages processing task.
In conclusion, the operating system is responsible for providing users with an interface that allow them to communicate directions in order to perform specified task on a computer. The operating systems help the above ...view middle of the document...
This system is made by Apple and is based off of Unix. Then last but not least is Linux. Linux isn’t a single operating system but more of several distributions all based off of the original Unix system.
First we are going to talk about viruses and the myths and facts about them within these three operating systems. Generally people often associate viruses with Window’s (OS) and not with Linux or OS X. This isn’t true, each system is vulnerable and the reason why Windows appears to be more vulnerable is because it has more viruses programmed for it. The reason OS X doesn’t have as much is because hackers don’t think it’s worth making viruses for MAC’S and also not a lot of people own MAC computers and Linux is the same as well.
Second we will talk about the software library of each (OS). Windows (OS) has the largest software library than any other (OS). This mean most programs, games and applications are meant for Windows. Microsoft Office is always available on Windows first and many gamers tend to use Windows because the games are meant for PC’s running Window (OS). Only a few games out are going to be able to run on OS X or Linux (OS).
Another difference is the hardware within each system. Mac OS X locks all users to Apple hardware unlike Windows and Linux. For Window’s and Linux you can choose what you want to install onto your OS. There are tons of options from makers like HP, Acer, Gateway and Dell to name a few. So if something goes wrong with your Mac, it could be a costly expense since Apple is the only company to make the hardware.
Then we have the stability of each system. It is often said OS X never crashes and is the most stable. Well, this can be said about Windows 7 because it’s the most stable Windows (OS) ever made. Also Linux can crash too, although it’s much more rare than Windows or OS X.
Lastly, we will talk about the popularity of the operating systems. Windows is the most popular (OS) worldwide but Apple computers have gained popularity in recent years especially in the industries of graphic design and video editing for the quality and performance of the program. Linux has the smallest share of home users, however commercial use is huge. The government industry uses a lot of mainframes and supercomputers with Linux (OS).
