According to the popular science theory of cholesterol, foods that are rich in animal fat and cholesterol can cause the artery walls to thicken, thus impairing blood flow. This condition is called atherosclerosis. But the question is, is it the high cholesterol that causes the artery walls to thicken, thus creating the potential for a heart attack? LDL is a lipoprotein that enables transport of lipids through the bloodstream. LDL has been regarded as a predictor of heart disease. An earlier study sponsored by the German Ministry of Research and Technology showed that no exact link exists between food cholesterol and blood cholesterol. In Japan, the cholesterol levels have risen during recent years, yet the number of heart attacks has dropped. The largest health study ever conducted on the risks of heart disease took place in China. Like so many similar studies, the Chinese study found no connection between heart disease and the consumption of animal fats (Moritz). So if all this evidence suggests that high cholesterol and heart disease are not positively correlated, why is cholesterol reducing drugs still the common solution to the problem?

As the article points out, a solution doctors often use when a patients LDL level is too high is to put him or her on a drug that belongs to a group called statins. The best-selling of the statins is atorvastatin, marketed as Lipitor. By 2003 it had become the best-selling pharmaceutical in history (CNN,Simons). This cholesterol-lowering drug, remains the best-selling drug in America in 2011 (Forbes,Herper).
