Assignment #1: The Critique Essay
What can technology do for you
Technology is changing everyday whether we like it or not. That is a fact. It is a tool we have been accustomed to using for life. Something we desire and need. From reading Neil Postman's book "Technolpoly: The Surrender of Culture to Technology" you can see he feels all technology will do is create a two sided argument. He says "Another way of saying this is that the benefits and deficits of a new technology are not distributed equally. There are, as it were, winners and losers" (Postman, 1992, Pg.10). He feels that if someone benefits, someone must also suffer but, I ...view middle of the document...
Postman states "It redefines "freedom," "truth," "intelligence," "fact," "wisdom," "history," -all the words we live by. And it does not pause to tell us. And we do not pause to ask"(Pg.8). Does he mean we look at them words differently now? Or do they have a new meaning that makes life more understandable. Is it our society adapting and changing around the world we live in? His belief that technology commandeers our most important technology is a biased point of view. To adhere to one man's perspective on the effects on technology to society will restrict the scope of the advantages technology has to bring. In order to look at the advantages of technologies, I agree we must also look at the disadvantages, but to what extent? Are the disadvantages of say the computer, going to out way the advantages of the computer? How can you argue that the computer will be a negative impact on life and society. I believe that Postman wants to see the negative in things. That regardless of what the technology is, he will only look at the negative things from it.
To me technology is a gift. Not a blessing or a religion, but a tool made so life can be more successful. We as man made the clock and run our lives around the clock. Technology has made it so we can get more out of the clock and accomplish the tasks we need to complete. What is the loser aspect of the computer I am using to write this paper? Can it really be so bad that what I am doing right now so devastating later on? I find it hard to believe that I am handicapping the future by using and agreeing with technology. Everyone is granted their own opinion but, to what extent is that though extremely biased. To argue Tilevitz statement " Being social in college means much less than it has in the past".(Tilevitz, 2011, Pg.1). How can this be true in the era of social media. Postman made it a point that media was a technology advancement that had a winner and loser, so is the social aspect in life the loser? How did social learning lose, when all it did was change. Instead of writing to people we send a text message or message on Facebook. We as humans are made to adapt to our surroundings and this is one of them. We never forgot the idea of being social we just found a more convenient approach to it. Now we do not have to wait weeks to see if our hand written letter...
