SINOPSIS

“Moneyball” mengisahkan tentang seorang manajer klub baseball dari tim Oakland Athletics, Billy Beane (Brad Pitt). Film ini dibuat berdasarkan kisah nyata yang dialami oleh klub Oakland Athletics pada tahun 2002 yang menggemparkan negeri Paman Sam. Kala itu klub A’s (julukan Oakland) telah ditinggal beberapa pemain bintangnya ke klub yang lebih memiliki reputasi tinggi dan A's kewalahan untuk mencari pengganti pemain bintangnya karena klub tersebut sedang mengalami krisis keuangan, Beane melakukan berbagai usaha untuk bisa membuat tim binaannya bangkit sampai-sampai Beane rela harus berhutang untuk membeli pemain-pemain bintang demi mendongkrak prestasi tim.

Dari angka-angka inilah bisa dilihat mana pemain yang murah namun masih layak untuk bermain dalam sebuah tim. Moneyball pertama kali menyatukan sebuah olahraga baseball dengan statistik, yang kemudian lebih dikenal dengan istilah sabermetrics.

Sejarah Moneyball

Prinsip Moneyball diperkenalkan dalam buku “Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game” yang ditulis berdasarkan kisah nyata oleh Michael Lewis pada tahun 2003. Buku ini menceritakan kisah seorang manajer tim baseball Oakland Athletics, Billy Beane dan asistennya yang merupakan seorang lulusan ekonomi bernama Paul DePodesta dalam menanamkan teori baru di dunia baseball. Billy mendapat ide dari Paul yang membuka pemikirannya jika pemain bagus tidak selalu bisa didapat dengan harga yang mahal. Billy Beane mengubah Oakland Athletics dari tim yang tak diperhitungkan menjadi klub kuda hitam di liga baseball Amerika dengan sumber dana seadanya.
