For over two hundred years, white males have been the most powerful group in the United States. Through economic exclusions, enforced by laws and reinforced by deep cultural attitudes, there has existed, in effect, a preferential hiring program for white males. In light of that historical reality and the dynamics that remain in our culture, evaluate the contemporary strategy of affirmative action for minorities to bring about more fairness in hiring and promotion practices. Draw heavily from the assigned readings and then explain and defend your arguments concerning affirmative action and "reverse discrimination."
551). Studies also show that there is still a significant occupational and income differences between white men on the one hand, and women and minorities on the other. But statistics by themselves do not prove discrimination. What must also be considered is widespread attitudes and institutional practices. When you have an office made up of mainly white, male professionals, should a position open up, they would have the tendency to look for a candidate amongst the people they know, which would be other white, male professionals. They do this not necessarily because they are purposely trying to discriminate, but simply because it is what they are used to and what they feel comfortable with. This type of thing is also referred to at the ‘good ol’ boy club,' and sad to say, it happens far more often than many people would like to admit. According to Kant “an action is right only if the agent would be willing to be so treated were the positions of the parties reversed," (Shaw & Barry, 2013, pg.68). I strongly doubt that were positions reversed, the ‘good ol’ boy’ club members would like being treated as the rest of the non members are treated.
Affirmative action programs have considerably helped in addressing this moral blight. Many companies have developed programs to correct imbalances that have existed as part of the ingrained injustices towards women, people of different races, different ethnic background and different religious persuasion.
