Mike And Marty Scanlon Essay

Mike & Marty Scanlon
1.   How would Freud explain the personality differences between Mike and Marty Scanlon?
Freud would explain the personality differences between the Mike and Marty Scanlon by stating that Mike Scanlon encountered some type of conflict or fixation during one of his psychosexual stages in life, most likely the phallic stage.   The phallic stage of personality development results when a child identifies with the same-sex parent in order to resolve internal conflict.   If problems occur during this stage, they might produce an adult who fails to develop a conscience and has improper sex-role behavior.   Marty Scanlon would be viewed by Freud as having passed through all of the psychosexual stages without fixations or conflicts.

According to ...view middle of the document...

It has been determined that genes do play a part in our personality, but both nature and nurture interact to form an individual’s personality.   I think temperament plays a large role in the case of Mike and Marty Scanlon because both individuals seem to have the same temperament throughout each of their lives.   Mike Scanlon has always been…

4. Which of the two brothers seems more likely to be achieving self-actualization, and why do you think so?
Marty, because self-actualization is where people reach their highest potential in a unique way. He is polite, has a great job in a financial company, and married his long-term girlfriend; Marty also has two kids with said woman. He works to better his life, and always has - starting in high school where he excelled in all subjects and now he works to improve his home and enrich his children’s lives. Mike is the exact opposite - dropping out of high school, entry level job, and fighting in bars.

5. Do Mike and Marty Scanlon appear to have different levels of intelligence, or do they show intelligence in different ways? Why do you think so?
It’s easy to say that they have different levels of intelligence, due to their different personalities, however, I believe that they have the same level of intelligence, but show it differently. Just because someone does well in school does not mean that they are not smart. Mike seems to be completely different in all aspects from Marty, but Mike does seem to have intelligence in nontraditional areas such as working with cars and has a more active social life than Marty. Marty is the type of guy that is safe and smart with his decisions, he married the person he was with forever, he studied hard in school, and took a safe job after college.
