Macbeth Opinion Piece

Shakespeare’s Macbeth is a play that challenges the characters willingness to give into evil and the risks they take to acquire power. After giving Macbeth a big speech about his manhood, Macbeth is left with one defense, “If we should fail”? (1.7.68). Macbeth has once again agreed to commit the act. Lady Macbeth also says, “screw your courage to the sticking place” (1.7.70), asking Macbeth to “toughen up” and be a man.

Lady Macbeth is highly ambitious and willing to commit evil for title of King’s mistress. As King Duncan is fed and in bed she proceeds with the first step of her plan by eliminating the guards, “ I have drugged their posset”(2.2.8-9) Having drugged the King’s guards and leaving them unconscious, Macbeth is clear to perform the act . Convinced by his wife, Macbeth proceeds in completing the deed eliminating the only thing between him and the crown. Lady Macbeth undoubtedly had the intent to commit evil by killing the King, making her no different than the witches in the play.
