As a counselor in a detention center for delinquent adolescent boys, my assignment is to observe the boys at the center, many of whom were in gangs. And, see if it is possible to identify solutions to reduce the intergroup conflicts. At the detention center gangs are something that is seen every day. According to the National institute of justice, a gang is “a group of individuals whose purpose is to engage in criminal activity which uses violence or intimidation to further its criminal objectives”. In a gang, some concepts that may led to ...view middle of the document...

This would surely causes some of the boys to defend them self’s and their family name. If having stereotypes and prejudice as an issues isn’t the answer to the reason why there has been many intergroup conflicts then perhaps, discrimination many be the main issues to look at. Discrimination in a gang is having behaviors traveling from one gang to another, until the behaviors reaches its limits and it becomes very violent causing even more conflicts between the groups. In the center it is possible that discrimination is the most perpetuated on going conflicts in the gangs at the center. This issues will continue until one gang wins. My definition of a gang is, a group of small minded individuals who agree with each other and then try to prove their point across to the world. Thus, causing conflict with other individuals who disagree with what they have to say (Hewstone, M., Rubin, M., & Willis, H. (2002). What many individuals are not aware are the strategies that have been put into place to deal with these intergroup conflict, strategies such as to identify what social groups provide clear normative prescriptions for behavior. (Hewstone, M., Rubin, (2002). According to the reading in the module there was a text which states that in order to reduce the conflicts, it would be helpful if the boys interacted with one another because “social scientists and others promoted the idea that the more people interacted with each other, the more likely they would get along” (M5A2 reducing inter group conflict). The two solutions provided in order to reduce the conflicts, can both be effective in the detention center. If and when the boys do choose to interact with one another it does leaves questioning wither or not the boy would behave in a nice organized manner. Which is the reason why it would be wise to lean towards of what was said in the module reading. In the Hewstone article we also found that if bias is reduce between subgroups who share a common superordinate identity, rather than consider themselves as members of separate groups (Dovidio Gaertner & Dovidio 2000) this also could reduce the conflicts taking place in the center. Looking back at the course, the two additional concepts that could be applied in helping a person overcome these negative attitudes and behaviors are, social norms that promote diversity such as having respect for cultural diversity...
