Loose Change Essay

Loose Change
The short story is a about a woman who lives in London or a ”Londoner” as she calls it. One day her period comes early as she is walking into the National Portrait Gallery to get warm. She doesn’t have any change for the tampon machine so she asks in the bathroom if anyone has got some change she could borrow. One girl responds. The girl and her brother fled from Uzbekistan, she is now homeless and all of her money can be kept in one pocket. The woman decides to take her out for a cup of tea out of gratefulness for the change she borrowed from her. The girl tells the woman about why she is now in England and how she and her brother are now sleeping on the streets of London ...view middle of the document...

This can leave the reader with the thought that the woman is slightly superficial. When the woman received her money from the girl, she finds the girl staring at a portrait of Darcy Bussell, and when she tries to approach her, all the girl says is “This is a good picture” and the woman feels insulted. She criticizes the picture in her head and says “Really, you like it?” What you get out of this sentence is that the girl doesn’t really seem to care about the money; she likes the beauty of the picture, she is a dreamer. The woman on the other hand is very judgmental and is bothered by the fact that the girl doesn’t pay attention to her.
As you get further into the story, it is revealed that the girl is a refugee from Uzbekistan, and is now homeless. This is the first time the woman actually looks at the girl and notices the dirt under her fingernails, her wrinkled blouse and her badly cut fringe. Suddenly she sees the girl in a different light and starts noticing all the flaws in the girl’s looks. This is when the woman’s hands starts to sweat as if she is afraid of the girl. As the girl moves on telling the woman her story, she talks about how she has never seen Tower Bridge. The woman starts feeling concerned and feels a pressure as if she has to take her there. She thinks to herself “But why me? I had my son to think of. Why pick on a single mother with a young son? We haven’t got the time. Those two women at the next table, with their matching handbags and shoes, they did nothing but lunch. Why hadn’t she approached them instead?” She feels as if she is being attacked, as if the girl is picking on her.
At one point the woman fantasizes about her helping the girl just like someone helped her grandmother many years ago. She thinks about all the nice things she would do to help her, like feed her, bathe her and give her fresh, warm clothes. As she’s creating an image of this she thinks to herself “All Laylor’s grandchildren would know my name” and this is where she goes from sounding caring and loving, to selfish and arrogant. She would do all of these nice things but only for her own personal gain.
