Childhood Obesity
Today most Americans are on the go and do not spend time cooking old fashion home cooked meals. Instead of eating meals at the dinner table, children are eating pre-packaged, fat enriched, sugar coated, ready to go meals in front of a television. Children spend an average of five and half hours in front a television screen a day (Volunteer Guide 2012). Children are uneducated on what they should eat, and as adults it is job to teach them what they should eat. Children that are overweight are more likely to be bullied and discriminated against regardless of their age, race, social skills, or academic skills (Thomson Reuters). If we starting teaching children at the age of five years old, then as children became older they would make better food choices. Children see commercials on television about fast-food, but if we gave them the education then they would know that it may taste good but the long term effects out weight the good taste. Most adults do not even know how unhealthy pre-packaged and fast food is because they ever had the education either. If there was a program in place to help teach people how to read labels and how to understand the food pyramid, then Americans would understand “You are what you eat”. If you put garbage into your body, then you will be garbage. It is not the American children fault that they are obese, it is the parents fault. If you allow your children to eat whatever they want, you are allowing your child to be obese.
If we taught children how to eat healthy parents would have to do their part. Instead of wanting a quick meal from a fast food restaurant, parents need to be cooking a home cooked meal. Parents would have to stop buying frozen pre-packaged junk food for their child and buy fresh fruits and vegetables. The downfall is they might have to spend more money at the grocery store, but they have to realize that their children health is at risk for high blood pressure, diabetes, and asthma.
