Abstract 

The purpose of this paper is to show how leadership, teambuilding, and communication affect an
organization. The organization that was researched for this paper is The United States Navy.
This paper will also examine contemporary, traditional, , and emerging leadership theories
which will describe the best leadership characteristics in terms of leadership style. We will
discuss interpersonal forms of power, showing how the characteristics impact performance.

An autocratic leader does not have to be
negative. In using the autocratic style, you can abopt a firm but fair stance on dealings with
your subordinates.
In the U. S Navy, they leader ship style tends to require an autocratic style, but distain for your
people or negative reinforcement is not successful. All hands are working to the same goal and
need to be led to a successful completion, not driven. The laissez-faire style gives employees
confidence in their abilities to do their job and allows them to stay motivated and become
more successful. The contemporary leadership style is when a leader uses their power to
influence and motivate employees to achieve a task. Contemporary leadership styles are
charismatic, transformational and transactional.  Transformational leadership inspires and
motivates followers, whereas transactional leadership is based more on reinforcement and

“Transactional leadership involves exchange of rewards for accomplishment. The Transactional
leader defines the reward but my also end of with a team that has a strong sense of entitlement.
The compensation advancement and meeting the goals directed should be the focus.
A transformational leader will positively motivate and coach their team to performance at their
highest level. The charismatic leader uses their personality and charm to have a positive and
motivational effect on their team.. They are expressive, and communicate well with their
subordinates and inspire them to perform well. Today, many leadership styles seem to be
centered on the situation vice the organization. Situational, contingency and transformational
leadership are all included in emerging leadership theories. Over the past 20 years leadership
theories started to focus on situational and contingency leadership, which encouraged leaders to
adapt to specific situation or traits their employees. Interpersonal Forms of Power 

Interpersonal forms of power are one of the earliest forms of power studied. This was studies by
John French and Bertram Raven, who decided that the form and the source a manager uses will
influence other people. In a work setting leaders will use different

forms of power with their employees. There are five Types of interpersonal power a leader will
use: reward, coercive, legitimate, referent, and expert power. Reward power is established by
leaders ability to reward team members for goal accomplishment. care needs to be taken to make
sure the team is away of the big picture and does not develop a sense of entitlement..
Coercive power is much different then reward power. it typical is a negative form and the Navy
has taken great strides or overcome this type of leadership. A leader will use this power to punish
an employee to get the desired behavior. Legitimate power is similar to authority; it is based on
