Leadership Style and Today's Nursing Leaders
Nursing leadership in health care today is a fast-paced, demanding and very challenging with shifting and competing priorities. Nursing leaders are receiving more scrutiny than ever as the performance expectations continue to rise at all levels of leadership in an effort to move health care organizations forward. Moreover, a managers’ success will largely depend upon their ability compare and contrast leadership styles, identify a leadership style that best fits their philosophy, in addition to that of the organization represented.

It is inclusive of both management and staff and addresses a very active form of leadership. Unlike autocratic leadership, transformational leadership focuses on influencing the environment of an organization by raising the level of staff performance and achieving outcomes. In this type of leadership, all members are encouraged to provide input. Where as, in autocratic management staffs contributions are not valued. Characteristics of transformational leadership also include broad-based staff job descriptions to allow for flexibility, roles are fluid, and the workforces are partners instead of employees. Information is made available through active lines of communication to facilitate work accomplishment and permit more opportunities for more staff members to contribute to organizational success (Raup, 2008). In addition, innovation and the ability to impact change is rewarded.
Transformational leaders are emerging more and more in today’s healthcare environment through the practice of shared Governance. A Chief Nursing officer at a major not for profit safety net hospital demonstrates the qualities of transformational leadership by utilizing unit practice councils. Unit Practice Councils (UPCs) are charged with making decisions at the unit level that influences and directs clinical practice. In addition to driving clinical outcomes and formulating quality improvement initiatives, they participate on all hospital committees that interact with the nursing department.
Transformational leaders are risk takers and pioneers that are paving the way to success. They achieve outcomes by elevating staff performance through staff driven processes. By involving staff in decision-making, it increases staff values and motivates them to achieve positive outcomes in the provision of patient care.
