Leadership is a reciprocal relationship between like-minded leaders and followers to achieve a realistic and positive change through empowerment and planning.

My definition of leadership is based on what I have learned in my leadership studies as well as my personal experiences with leadership throughout my life. I use aspects from some of the previous definitions of leadership that once were used and accepted. I personally believe that leadership can be rightly defined in many different ways depending on the circumstances that are used to describe it. Using this knowledge, I need to adapt to them and find a way to delegate tasks that they can succeed in. However, I catch myself asking to much of them even though I know they would probably fail. I like to give to people the benefit of the doubt and see the potential that many of my followers have. I always try to push them to their limits and see if they can break free from them with this mindset. Many of them do not like this sometimes, but I always try and think of the greater good this can have on them and the organization.
Having charisma is something that is essential for a leader. This is something that separates good leaders from great leaders and is one of the traits that anyone can have. Leaders should always be charismatic when addressing their followers in order for them to lead successfully. According to Webster’s dictionary, charisma is a special charm or appeal that causes people to feel attracted and excited about someone, and a personal magic of leadership arousing special popular loyalty or enthusiasm for a public figure. Many followers follow someone because they have charisma and believe in what they are saying. This is why some people end up doing things that they don’t like for a greater cause. Charisma is what is always present when a leader is enacting a social change.
Leadership as a social change is a form of leadership that has been happening a lot recently. This is when a leader is able to gather followers to try and change something that they all feel passionate about. The social change can be anything positive that these people feel should be changed. Some of these social changes that have been prominent lately are gay marriage rights and wage inequality in the work force. Both of these involve a change that many people are passionate about and want to see changed in the future. Many times in the past, social change was going against society norm and was met with opposition. Leaders needed charisma to keep people motivated and keep pushing the issue forward.
When Martin Luther King Jr. was promoting the racial inequalities around America, black people were not sure at first whether or not to join the movement. There were many times in the past where blacks tried to bring equality, but failed to see a decision passed. However, Martin Luther King Jr. was able to relate to his people and rally their emotions to fight with him. He did not believe in violence and wanted to change America peacefully. It took years for his dream to be realized, but his charismatic leadership and unwillingness to accept defeat kept his dream alive till completion.
The things that I learned in my contemporary leadership class showed me that leaders are not perfect and should never be thought of as perfect.
