Integrative Network Design Project
As the Integrative Network Design Project moves in to part three the need to evaluate the Patton-Fuller Community Hospital network to identify additional properties and functions. This paper will look at the hardware and software needed to secure the network against electronic threats, will examine the use of Wide Area Networks (WAN) and Local Area Networks (LAN) and the technologies used to implement them, and finally the concepts of data communication networks will be explored.

In a denial of service attack, the servers are intentionally overloaded to force the inoperable state. At that point the hacker can easily gain control of the network by installing a virus onto the network and thus accessing vital data.
These are very real threats and it is imperative that both software and hardware are put into place to protect the networks data. Firewalls are commonly used to filter out potential threats and can be either a hardware appliance or a software application. The firewall is placed in front of the network itself and acts a barrier to outside threats. These appliances are capable of limiting the amount of traffic coming into the network and can be set up to filter out specifically known threats. Another option is the use of Secure Socket Layer (SSL) which encrypts data packets before it is moved over the network rendering it unreadable if it should be intercepted. Other options that are available to protect the network would be the use of one-way hashing algorithms or transport layer security.
The methods used for securing the network are often time determined by the type of network involved. In this section we will look at the three types of networks, Local Area Networks (LAN), Wide Area Network (WAN) and finally Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN). An LAN is a common network used where data needs to only travel short distances. They often connect the servers, workstations, fax machines, and printers within organizations with single physical location. The WAN on the other hand is designed to transport data over longer distances and connects organizations that...
