Assignment: SCI203 Phase 1 Lab Report
Title: Human Impacts on the Sustainability of Groundwater
Instructions: You will need to write a 1-page lab report using the scientific method to answer the following question:
* If current human development does not change, will groundwater sustainability be affected?
When your lab report is complete – submit it in the classroom.
Part I: Using the time progression of industrialization and human development, fill in the data table below to help you write up your lab report.
Time Period | Impact to Forest | Groundwater Levels | Saltwater Intrusion | ...view middle of the document...
A ground-water system consists of a mass of water flowing through the pores or cracks of below the Earth’s surface. Water is constantly added to the system by recharge from precipitation and water is constantly leaving the system as discharge to surface water and as evapotranspiration. (U.S. Geological Survey, n.d.)
* Hypothesis/Predicted Outcome
Because of the current waste, oil spills, and other pollution, I believe that groundwater sustainability will be greatly affected if current human development does not change.
As shown in the live chat with Professor Albina, I decided the best method to use would be the scientific method: Observation, Questions, Hypothesis, Predictions, Test, and Results.
According to the chart in Part I of the assignment, it seems as though the groundwater level will continue to decrease if change is not made.
The results I found were exactly what I expected. If we, the human race, do not make a change, we can potentially run out of water. This would be bad for all living things.
