Selecting, Retaining, and Motivating Employees
Within the Workplace

The topic of human resource and understanding organizational behaviors has been becoming more and more relevant, important, and crucial to the underlying success of a business. That is why more and more businesses today are adapting and implementing the practice of HR programs and organizational behaviors. Expanding on the thought of HR programs and organizational behaviors, they both stem from the managerial position and each managerial position within a business is responsible for integrating and incorporating these HR and OB theories and practices. Disney’s strategy can be described as creating the intangible “magic” for every occurring customer’s experience; this strategy becomes the goal or overall mission statement of the business and this then influences the culture of Disney. The goal set can only be accomplished from within the organization such as management and employees; the ones who deal with customers are the ones that determine the output of success. Disney combats this goal by establishing a strong and friendly culture within their entire organization. Strong meaning every employee buys into the organization’s concepts and culture of what the organization wants, employees are not only more likely to perform at a higher rate but also perform how you want them to and less likely to produce any unwanted work behaviors. Disney carries out this message with a mechanistic organization structure with little aspects of an organic structure, jobs within the organization are very narrowly defined but with de-centralized decision-making by lower level managers and the ultimate decision made with high centralization from the top level managers followed by high formalization that permit the rules, regulations, and standardizations. This structure is heavily influenced by the strategy and culture of the organization, as this organization has a common goal of creating ‘magic’ for the customer, this message is sent from the top level managers through high centralization, the message is then passed down through levels all the way to the lower level employees of the company, as well the strong culture is demonstrated through this structure as decisions are made from the top level managers lower level employees follow suit and follow the given commands made from the higher levels rather then having mixed messages from a workplace that has a wider span of control.
After establishing the type of culture, structure, and strategy that Disney instills, the questions of how to select, retain and motivate employees can now be answered. Firstly, the recruitment process and selecting the right employees for the job are crucial for any business especially one that insinuates a strong culture. With the mechanistic structure, as a manager there are two options I could either recruit internally and look at potential candidates that have developed within the organization, or possibly recruit externally finding the right skilled candidates for the job. Advantages of recruiting internally would be that the employee chosen for promotion is already familiar with the organization and culture so the process of the correct job fit has already been done, costs to recruit are much less then recruiting externally, increases in workplace morale and motivation when one employee gets rewarded and promoted for doing a good job it makes the others want to work just as hard to be rewarded as well. Although there are drawbacks as it can also increase internal competition and possibly jealousy to those who don’t get...
