Hoosiers Film Adaptation
The movie Hoosiers was a great story that dealt with many of the topics covered in our readings for this week. The story is about a small-town Indiana basketball team that overcomes many challenges to win the state championship. The main character of the movie is Norman Dale, a passionate basketball coach that faces many obstacles in his attempt to teach his players about the benefits of working together as a team. The movie dealt with many team oriented topics such as team development, interdependence, group cohesiveness, intergroup problems, and confrontation.

This shows the player that even though he is good it is not about him, it is about the team. It stresses the importance of each and every player on the team working together as one, and that no one player is above the team. His philosophy of group cohesiveness and working towards a common goal were important to the success of the team.
The coach worked on team building and team development. They already had certain roles which the town expected them to play; they even advised the coach to play a certain defense at a gathering. They were telling him how to do his job and he knew from the start that he would have to “break them down and build them back up” as he said. There was a lack of structure which he created by having the team work together, to believe in each other, and communicate. All the hours spent on practicing without a ball to develop a group setting where they all relied on each other. No one was bigger, better, or more important to the team as another.
The coach also had to deal with intergroup conflict between the team and the townspeople. The team did not want to hear someone telling them what to do. They also did not believe in each other. There was one short player out of all of them which they constantly picked on. The coach did not take that type of hazing and made them work on training together to build interpersonal relationships where in the end proved that they did have the ability to work together effectively and efficiently.
