ISTORIJAT ČITALIŠTA U KNJAŽEVCU:

Grad Knjaževac, nekada pod imenom Gurgusovac, razvija i održava pismenost i svoje čitalište već više od 150 godina. Još 1833.god. počela je sa radom prva škola u kojoj su đaci pisali zašiljenim drvetom ili kamenom na tablicama od lipe. O prosvećenosti i kulturi celog okruga, naročito tadašnjeg Gurgusovca, govori i podatak da je veliki broj prenumeranata na razna izdanja bio baš iz tog grada. Na Vukov Srpski rječnik iz 1852.god. bilo je pretplaćeno 40 Gurgusovčana, odmah posle Beograda i Zagreba. Beleži se i znatan broj ...view middle of the document...

Izveštaji iz tog vremena prenose da je u čitalištu bilo 119 knjiga, 17 slika, bez mapa, a od novina i časopisa imalo je sve poznatije naslove. Čitalište je, nažalost, trpelo pod raznim istorijskim događajima. Izgorelo je u Srpsko-turskom ratu 1876.god, obnovljeno je 1880. i tako radilo do 1888.god. kada je zapalo u krizu i ugasilo se.

Ponovo obnovljena u okviru "Nedeljne praznične škole", a pod organizacijom "Knjaževačka omladina", čitaonica nastavlja sa radom. Bila su osnovana razna partijska, radnička i sindikalna udruženja, pa i kasine u kojima je bilo čitaonica, među njima i "Knjaževačko radničko društvo" koje je u svom programu imalo osnivanje čitaonice i biblioteke. Sve tadašnje knjaževačke škole su, takođe, imale biblioteku. Odmah posle oslobođenja 1918.god. javila se potreba da se i u selima otvore čitaonice, što je i učinjeno 1920.god. kada je u Donjem Zuniču osnovana čitaonica, a ubrzo nakon toga otvarane su i u drugim selima u opštini, uglavnom u zadružnim domovima. Posle Drugog svetskog rata i zvaničnog oslobođenja Knjaževca počela je značajna aktivnost da se oforme biblioteka za građanstvo i omladinska knjižnica, u kojoj su presudnu ulogu imali prosvetni radnici. Uz angažovanje učenika Gimnazije, prikupljen je značajan broj knjiga od intelektualaca i znamenitih ljudi Knjaževca. Jedan od značajnijih darodavaca bio je i Aca Stanojević, koji je pozdravio želju omladine da formira svoju biblioteku i poklonio veći broj knjiga za obe čitaonice. Svaka od njih je raspolagala sa oko 300 knjiga koje su bile ispečaćene i popisane u knjigu inventara, koja je služila i kao katalog.

Radi koordiniranja rada svih gradskih i seoskih čitaonica, početkom 1954.god, formiran je Sreski bibliotekarski centar čiji je fond iznosio oko 14 000 knjiga. Već u martu mesecu sledeće godine taj centar je prerastao u Gradsku biblioteku koja je raspolagala skoro udvostručenim fondom od oko 23 000 jedinica, mada sa dosta brošura. Formiran je i pokretni fond, a samo u tri sela nije postojala čitaonica. Narodni odbor opštine Knjaževac je 25. marta 1961.god. doneo rešenje kojim određuje ovu biblioteku za Matičnu biblioteku sa 23 seoske čitaonice. Zbog izražene migracije stanovništva iz sela u grad, broj ovih čitaonica se smanjivao, da bi se 90-ih godina ugasile i poslednje i preostali samo ogranci biblioteke u Kalni i Minićevu, koji i danas rade. Bibiloteka je tada imala svoju pokretnu službu, tada poznatiju kao Knjigobus, koji je kombijem i svojim pokretnim fondom udovoljavao potrebama seoskih čitalaca.

Decembra 1973.god. bila je pokrenuta inicijativa da biblioteka dobije ime, a među predlozima su bila imena našeg nobelovca, Ive Andrića, botaničara i kniževnika, profesora na Univerzitetu u Beogradu, Stevana Jakovljevića, i velikana književnosti 19.veka, Petra Petrovića Njegoša.
