1. Herman Miller Inc. has constantly focused on a reinvention and renewal growth strategy. They have done multiple things over the past century that have kept them in business, surviving The great Depression, multiple recessions in the 20th century, and the dot-com bust in the 21st century. They have made many changes during the life of the company to try and continually improve and stay ahead of its competitors, hiring design experts from numerous places that were able to design award winning furniture. They have also made many business decisions that have enabled them to remain one of the best companies in the world year after year. HMI’s values are reflected in the company’s policies through the organizational values, which consist of: curiosity and exploration, engagement, performance, inclusiveness, design, foundations, a better world, and transparency. These organizational values were published on the company’s website titles “What We Believe.” These were intended to unite all employees so they would all contribute to all communities within the company. All employees, no matter of position, were expected to live these values.
5. Yes, I believe so. The values that all employees must live by facilitate strategy execution. In their list of values, it states that performance is required for leadership and that it isn’t a choice. HMI’s performance strategy is to perform at his or her best to enrich their lives as employees, create value for their shareholders and delight the customers. HMI also enforces a value on its employees to contribute to a better world. This is the heart of the company. They strive to give back to their communities and causes outside the company and encourage their employees to do the same.
6. They have been able to withstand numerous blows, including the Great Depression along with others, while a very large percentage of companies have folded during these times. There is a reason they have been able to remain at the top of the list for U.S companies and have won numerous awards throughout the years. While the company should always look for places to improve, HMI has seemed to make the necessary changes to keep the company very successful, being able to adapt to the many challenges it has faced over the past century.
