Intro to Speech
Can genetically engineering crops be helpful or harmful to human life? Over the years we have seen a steady rise in the production of genetically modified foods. This has caused a swelling of opinions from people on the GMOs. There are advantages and concerns about this process of enhancing food. Controversy about the thought of modifying food has spread worldwide. People are wary about the idea because they want to know exactly what is in the food that they are eating and because we are swaying away from naturally growing crops. However growing these modified crops could possibly put an end to some of the world’s challenges, such as ...view middle of the document...
Research has shown that there are many advantages that can come from this fairly new invention. As we all know the world’s population is continuously growing and making sure that there is an adequate amount of food is very important. Growing genetically modified foods will meet this need in a number of ways.
These GMOs or “super crops” can be modified to be pest resistant. Growing crops that are naturally pest resistance would be a huge help to modern farmers and the environment. With crops being injected with the gene to become pest resistant this will cut down on the use of pesticides that can be health hazards to humans and the environment. Not only do GMOs reduce the use of pesticides but also herbicides that are used to kill weeds that affect the growth of crops. Other than the fact that crops can be modified to be pest resistant, they can also be injected with an anti-freeze or anti-drought gene.
Malnutrition is a huge problem in third world countries such as Africa. One of the biggest advantages of genetically modified organisms is enhanced nutritional value of products. Enhancing the nutrition of food in third world countries would be very helpful to many people. Plant Science researchers have been able to create rice that is high in vitamin A. They are hoping to make this “golden rice” as they call it available to any third world country that is in need. With the help of genetically modified foods people in these countries will become healthier with getting the nutrients necessary to live.
Although genetically modified foods have the potential to do a lot of good for the growing population there are many concerns about them as well. Like all new technologies they pose some risk both known and unknown. For the most part concerns about genetically modified foods fall under three different categories; environmental hazards, human health risks, and economic concerns. One concern that people have is that corn plants that are pest resistance are causing unintended harm to other organisms. This is because the gene that makes them pest resistant is lethal to all insects and not just the ones that are damaging the crops.
Another concern about the environment is that pests will become resistant to these new modified plants. Although this is a logical concern this would not cause any harm to the environment or human life and scientists would be able to find a new gene to replace the old one. Growing GMOs does put the environment in danger by unintended harm to other organisms and also there is a fear of cross breeding with the modified organisms. Some people are concerned that the seedlings that...
