Facebook Essay

431 words - 2 pages

First of all, owning a PVC pipe is illegal?! The laws in Missouri couldn’t get much crazier. The law stating that social networking between teachers and students is prohibited that was passed by Missouri Governor Jay Nixon is based on a situation that happened DECADES ago, when a girl was molested by her teacher. Missouri was the first state to do this. But things have changed over the decades, and banning student-teacher social networking relationships isn’t going to stop any creepy teachers from molesting a student if they want too, and most people have cell phones. There’s no stopping it. Plus, in order to enforce this law, the ...view middle of the document...

There have been many cases where teachers have been able to stop students from making a bad/harmful decision, or get them the help that they need. Teachers are also a source of support for students. Some teachers were even a source of comfort after the tornado. Bottom line is, if students like their teachers, chances are they will enjoy their classes more, and therefore do better in school and actually enjoy getting an education.

Third, what people post on a PUBLIC social networking site on the INTERNET is their choice. If a teacher is friends with their students, they’re taking the risk that ALL the students that they’re friends with will see whatever they post. If they post an embarrassing picture or change a relationship status, it’s not the student’s fault for talking about it, and that goes for what the students post as well. The thing is, when you post something on the internet, it’s NEVER private, no matter what your privacy settings are set to. It’s the account holder’s responsibility to filter what they post, not other account holders’, or the government’s.

The fact that this law was passed is ridiculous. Social networking sites are sources of communication, hence the name “social networking.” It is possible for teachers and students to have a good and appropriate relationship. Trying to enforce this law would be unconstitutional and cause even more people to become upset. Relationships between people on the internet or anywhere else is none of the government’s business.
