Extended Definition of Comedy.
Define “comedy”. When browsing the Internet for the definition of comedy, they all have the quote: “a light and humorous drama with a happy ending.” Comedy is full of opposites and contradictions. Something is funny when it’s both expected and unexpected. Something is funny when it’s familiar and unfamiliar. There are various types of comedy including irony, sarcasm, parody, spoof and many more. Irony is where the opposite of what is expected happens or where someone says the opposite of what they mean, while sarcasm is where an insult or quick remark is fired at someone with the intention of causing injury. Meanwhile, a zoo keeper is painting a bench black. Now, of course she doesn’t know that the bench’s original color is not black, and the zoo keeper is not there to warn her about it, unfortunately, so we can all assume what is going to happen. She sits on the wet black bench in her new white coat and ends up with black stripes across her back. If the zoo keeper would have warned her about the wet, black bench, then the woman would not end up with black stripes across her back. In fact, she would be very appreciative that she didn’t stain her new white coat. That wouldn’t have been comedy because what we expected to happen, didn’t. Also, it would not be comedy because nobody was hurt or bruised in the act.

Comedy is funny when someone is making a mock out of someone or something else. For instance, a woman in glasses with her hair tied up, who is obviously beautiful anyway, takes off her glasses and then unties her hair and shakes it loose. As she does, her wig falls off. This is funny not just because of the fact that her wig fell off, but because the audience is fully aware of the reference and know that usually this is not supposed to happen.
