The elements of informed consent include informing the client of the nature of the treatment, possible alternative treatments, and the potential risks and benefits of the treatment. Anybody over the age of sixteen is legally aloud to give their own consent, however if you are under the age of sixteen then it is down to your parent/guardian to give consent for you to be able to participate within a psychological experiment. Although, not all experiments include humans, many include animals. As you are aware, animals are unable to give consent so they do not really have a choice whether they want to be a participant within an experiment or not. This is one of the main reasons why psychologists mainly use animals when they are doing experiments. Once consent has been given, the psychologists conducting the experiment knows all the confidential stuff about the participants who are taking part. For example, they are aware of there full name, address etc. Psychologists must ensure that no one else finds this confidential information out. Psychologists are able to record the results to any experiment, but have to change the name etc of the participants taking place. Consent could be classed as an ethical consideration when relating to research conducted into genetic influences on behaviour because psychologists have to consider that not everyone who they want to take part in the experiment, will want to do so themselves. Therefore, they always need to have a back-up plan incase there first ones fails.
