Statistics show that in 2004 the percentage of students in year 11, the grades achievement by ethnicity for 5 GCSE`s or more were Chinese 85%, India 72 %, whites with 55%, Bangladeshi 45%, Pakistani 37% and blacks with 34%. (DFE 2012) There is also an important class difference within ethnicity, middle class children perform better than working class children. However the ethnic group are working hard and achievement are improving and overall working class white students are performing at the lower level among the entire ethnic group. Girls are more likely to pass AS and A level with higher grades for example 95.8% girls passed 2 or more A levels as opposed to 94% boys in 2006 with girls getting grades A, B and C in maths, science and physics which are meant to be boys subject. The A level score for states school on average is 295 for girls compared to 274 for boys, this trend continuing even in vocational course with girls achieving more distinctions than boys (webb, r et al 2008)

Poor housing conditions include, over crowding, short tenancy, dampness, temporary accommodation that contribute to psychological distress to a child. Poor diet, which leads to poor nutrients, will affect child health, lower stamina hence absence from school. Lack of finances mean that may children will lack access to educational equipment like Internet and books. Hansley (1980) argued that lack of finances led to children from the working class background not to continue with school after 16 and there is a high dropout rate in higher education for students with low-income background. (Maloney2010). Mortimer and Whitty (1985) argued the material factors have greater impact on achievement than school factor.
