Assignment 01: Assessments

My high school uses assessments in various different ways. The fundamental use of them, the most obvious in my opinion, is to assign a grade to each student that illustrates their understanding of the material. Teachers do this by giving tests and quizzes. In addition to assigning grades, my high school uses assessments as a basis to decide whether a student can move up to a higher level course or if they should stay in the base level one. For example, a student’s grade on a final math exam their junior year is used to determine if that student will take calculus their senior year or honors calculus. To me, these uses of assessments are completely valid, especially since the teachers would not just give the assessments a letter grade and move on. They would take a closer look at them. Consequently, I felt like I was wasting my time in these classes because I was not performing well on the assessments and also felt like I was learning useless information. Aside from this, most assessments helped me learn a great deal. For me, it is hard to motivate myself to do well if there are no consequences. A consequence, for example, is doing poorly on a test, quiz, or other type of assessment and receiving a bad grade. I think my fear of this motivates me to actually put in the work to understand the content. The only down side to this fear that leads to motivation, is the stress that accompanies it. Even if I prepare adequately for an assessment, I still find myself feeling stressed because I am concerned if my teacher has made it clear what topics will be on the assessment. This is because there have been cases in which I know the material my teacher has told me to know front to back, and then once I get the assessment there are topics which the teacher did not mention at all. This stress leads students to memorize the material for a test rather than actually trying to learn it. I think this is because students are solely focused on the grade they receive and not their understanding of the information. In order to correct this and improve assessments teachers could implement a type of follow up test after the first. In other words, a teacher gives a test on certain material and then after grading them, allow the students to go over the test and make corrections in order to actually learn from their mistakes. Then give another test on the same material, just with different questions. Hopefully, the students will improve on the second one because they have the resources to do so. So students take the first test seriously and not bank on the second one, the teacher can take the average of the two tests. This would place an equal amount of importance on both assessments. I believe this would improve assessments because it would encourage students to actually learn and understand the material, rather than just attempt to memorize it for the test and then forget everything after they take it.
