Industry Leaders need to use strategies to compete successfully in the market.
To continue to stay on top and enjoy the status and income or profit potential, they must be always on the alert. Thomson and Strickland suggest that these companies need to pursue the following strategic moves:
a) Stay on the offensive strategy. This attitude means that the business organization must continuously pursue offensive strategies. The following should be done:
i) Be a first mover, leading industry change;
ii) Best defense is a good defense;
iii) Relentlessly pursue continuous improvement and innovation

Classifications:
a) Market Challengers. This group category includes firms trying their best to use offensive strategies to gain market share and challenge industry leaders in the hope of displacing their position.
b) Focusers. This group includes firms using focus or niche strategies concentrating on serving a limited or specific portion of market which they can eventually use to capitalize in pursuing other strategic directions.
c) Perennial runners-up. This category includes firms that are contended with simply making the business not necessarily competitive but profitable enough to meet hurdle rate.
Industry analysis Matrix
To be able to craft a competitive strategy, it is important to know the level of attractiveness of the industry or sector that a business is venturing into. There are a variety of quantitative means to assess industry attractiveness such as matrix or other quantitative parameters that can use to, support the credibility of the output of industry analysis.
The result of the computation process shown in the EFAS (External Factor Analysis) table indicates the level of attractiveness of the industry or industry competitiveness index which can be compared to the hurdle rate or criteria of strategic managers whether to invest into the industry or not.
