However, 2 years later, in 1980 he ran for the position once again this time coming out victorious with a vote of 52% to 46%, and now turning the seat into a republican one. That year the Washington Post accused him of having a relationship with his chief of staff Brad W. Smith. Smith received $156,600,the highest paid salary possible among people in his position. Cynthia Matthews came out of the closet during the election and wanted Dreier to follow suit. He did not publically address these allegations. (The New York Times)

In 2003 Dreier was Arnold Schwarzenegger co-chair for his Campaign for Governor of the state of California. To this day the two have a strong relationship and remain allies. (Werner) In 2005 Dreier was Tom Delay’s Interim replacement as house majority leader due to the fact that DeLay was indicted that year for a conspiracy charges. Dreier failed to permanently become the majority leader due to the fact that Roy Blunt was voted into that position. The Washington Post believed that “Dreier has a more moderate voting record on some social issues than DeLay.” Dreier has also been the vice president for Dreier Development which is his family’s real estate company based out of Kansas City.
