Cyber Predators

Sexual predators have more access to children today than in the past. Through the internet Sexual offenders can connect with children more discreetly. Today, children are just as likely to socialize online as they are to meet in the mall or by going to other public places like the movies. Predators use the anonymity of the internet to their advantage since it allows them to become whoever they want. They target both girls and boys of all ages. "Child predators are migrating from traditional methods to alternate media," says Detective Lt. Thomas Kish of the Michigan State Police. "They are going to places where children are.” (Wendy, K) Many children are not aware of ...view middle of the document...

As a society we have decided that they are unable to fully grasp all the consequences of their actions. It is hard for a child to make this sort of decision properly.
Jennifer’s mother is also wrong, in failing to protect her daughter from harm by this predator. When Jennifer’s mother first became aware of the illegal activities her daughter was apart of, she should have reported it immediately. This was part of her duty as a parent. As her mother she should be held accountable for what Jennifer was involved in. Jennifer’s mother is guilty of child neglect. It would be a different situation if Jennifer was dating a man that was old than her but her mother consented. But the problem here is that there was illegal activity of child pornographic video and prostitution. The reason for Jennifer’s behaviors can be a result of emotional neglect. Jennifer seems to be engaging in these acts because she is happy to support herself and her family financially and also because she may believe this is acceptable behavior. Jennifer’s mother knows what her daughter is doing in order to make money and be independent and yet she allows her to put herself at risk. Jennifer’s mother is in the position of power. She has the obligation to teach and guide Jennifer in the right direction. The emotional damage of this behavior can be lifelong. “Children who are emotionally abused may suffer from feelings of inadequacy, isolation, or being unwanted or unloved. They may have low self-esteem and consider themselves unworthy.”(Wallace, H & Roberson, C p. 104) Seen Jennifer expressed interest in bettering her life by going to the Army, she should be given permission to go. Her mother’s objection to Jennifer going to the army seems to be selfish. She may only want to keep her daughter around for the income she provides to the household and not because she is genuine concerned about Jennifer. These facts should be investigated to ensure that Jennifer is in a safe environment at home.
Jennifer can be prevented by her mother from going to the army. I do not feel that this is right, because it will mean better opportunity for Jennifer. In the United States recruits must be 18 years old to join and 17 years old with the signed consent of their legal guardian. Unfortunately Jennifer will have to wait a couple of years to enlist in the army. But if her mother was willing to consent, Jennifer could join at 17 years old.
The internet is a great tool, giving us information at lightning speeds. Everything we need at the click of a button, research, travel, networking, and much more. The internet is also a great place for children too. It’s a place they can be entertained and do their studies too. On the negative side the internet helps people find ways of doing illegal things as well. More and more sexual predators are online searching for their next victim. “ In a report published by the University of New Hampshire and the National Center for Missing & Exploited...
