Unit 9 Final Essay The Correctional System
In the correctional system we have two things we look at. The first things we look at is how they punish offenders and the second is how they rehabilitate offenders. We will look at both things throughout this paper. We will discuss how they punish offenders and how they rehabilitate the offenders. We will also talk about which one we think is more effective in reducing crime.
There are many ways the correctional system punish the offenders. First we have prison, this is where we send offenders who have committed a heinous crime. Most murders, rapist ...view middle of the document...
Electronic monitoring is an electronic system that provides probation officers with information about the offender’s whereabouts (2001-2014 USLegal, Inc.). Offenders who are placed on the electronic monitoring are to stay in their homes if they leave the probation officer is notified (2001-2014 USLegal, Inc.).
Last we have capital punishment. We sentence offenders to capital punishment which is the death penalty. We usually ask for the death penalty when an offender has committed a capital offence (1981-2005 by Gerald N. Hill and Kathleen T. Hill). Most of the people who get the capital punishment are offenders who have committed heinous murders. These are some of the way the correctional system punishes it offenders.
There are many ways that the correctional system helps rehabilitate offenders. One of these rehabilitation is life skills. Life skills training is treated as an educational program emphasizing the world of work, practical living skills, personal growth and management, and social skills (Coffey, Osa D.; Knoll, John F.pg 81). Life skills help the offenders to live more successful in the community.
There is also counseling for offenders to help with rehabilitation. Counseling is used to help the offenders develop skills to live in the community and have a safe place to go to talk to someone. They can go to the counselors and talk about the problems they are having. The most common type of counseling is drug counseling. One-third of state prison inmates and over 20 percent of federal inmates report being on drugs at the time of their offense for which they were subsequently incarcerated (Maguire and Pastore, p. 508). This will help the offenders by helping them talk about the problems they are having and hopefully get to the root of the reason they commit crimes.
There is vocational education rehabilitation. Offenders who receive vocational education are less likely to return to prison (RAND Corporation). The offenders who receive this kind of training are more likely to get a job. Researchers found that inmates who participate in correctional education programs have a 43 percent lower odds of returning to prison than those who do not (RAND Corporation). These are some of the ways the correctional systems help rehabilitate offenders.
I believe that the punishment and rehabilitation goes hand in hand to help reduce crime. Let’s start with why I think punishment will help...
