Deciding to become an alcohol or substance abuse counselor can be a very rewarding but stressful occupation. It takes a special person who has compassion, patience and a genuine desire to help people. After completion of the required educational curriculum, there are many organizations that one could look to find opportunities to work with people in need. Also, there are being familiar with the different organization out there that make up the addiction-counseling field will be vital to a the success of the counselor-client relationship. This essay will discuss the different organizations out there that offer support for the counselor and the client.

National advocacy groups are organizations that work to speak on behalf of those who are in need of help. In regards to addiction treatment, they help erase the stigma of getting help and rally to make changes in policies and legislature to help people find treatment and believe in the possibility of recovery. Many of their mission statement indicate that education is key to recovery and they push for public awareness for addiction as a disease to help curb the discrimination against people who need help. They speak on behalf of those in need to the medical facilities to help find medical coverage because addiction is a disease and should be treated like any other medical illness. They also encourage emergency room to screen for alcohol and drug problems.
Recovery mutual aid societies are organizations that provide relief on a voluntary basis. They usually share a similar background, be it ethnic, religious or geographical. In terms of addiction, examples of this type of organization would be Alcohol Anonymous Narotics Anonymous and Women for Sobriety. These groups give the person in need the steps necessary to recover. They all start with identifying the problem and accepting the responsibility of the problems. They also call for sustained or long-term recovery management instead of acute intervention.
One of the most influential approaches to addiction treatment is recognizing addiction as a disease. There has been years of research to confirm the fact that addiction cause permanent brain damage that effects the specific neurotransmitter of the brain that control impulses, moods, memory, decision making and cognitive awareness. With the continued abuse of drugs and alcohol, the balance in the brain is tilted and now is under the control of the impulsive urges that would normally be kept at bay. David R.
